Matt Stonie Bests Joey Chestnut On Competitive Eating’s Largest Stage

July 8, 2015

Joey Chestnut’s 8-year reign as the King of Coney Island is over. Matt “Megatoad” Stonie won the 2015 Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes, 2 more than Chestnut’s 60 on Saturday.

Every 4th of July, the world of competitive eating hits the Coney Island boardwalk for one of the most outrageous traditions this country has to offer. Takeru Kobayashi really put the contest on the map when he starting eating more hot dogs than anyone had seen, dipping the buns in water and shimmying the dogs down.

Then Joey Chestnut showed up, beat Kobayashi, and took over as the best. Kobayashi was later banned for refusal to sign a contract with Major League Eating, and in the meantime, Chestnut ran off a total of 8 straight wins without any major competition.

Matt Stonie taking Joey Chestnut down is not only a huge upset, but also a sign that the game is on for years to come. Chestnut vs. Stonie is a rivalry you’ll be seeing for a long time.
