Fabricio Werdum Upsets Cain Velasquez At UFC 188

June 19, 2015

Mexico City welcomed UFC 188 this Saturday and the crowd was in for a surprise when #1 contender and interim heavyweight champion Fabricio Verdum submitted Mexican fan favorite Cain Velasquez in the third round of their five round title fight. Cain came out strong, but endured more damage than we’re used to seeing on him in the first round. Once the fight hit the second round though, you could see that Cain was having trouble with his cardio due to the altitude. Verdum showed why he’s the man in the heavyweight division, and backed up all he had to say in the weeks leading up.

Gilbert Melendez lost his second fight in a row when Eddie Alvarez defeated him via split decision. Alvarez came back from a nasty closed up eye in the first round to catapult him up near the top of the battered lightweight division.

Kevin Gastellum defeated Nate Marquardt with a second round TKO. The altitude played a part in this fight as it did in a lot of fights Saturday night. Marquardt was gassed and his corner threw in the towel before the third round.

VFD gives brands opportunities to take advantage of the growing popularity of MMA and the UFC. With a new heavyweight champ, MMA pundits are calling Fabricio Werdum one of the best ever. With victories over all time greats Fedor Emelianenko and Velasquez, there’s no doubt that his name is on the list.
