UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen Predictions from VFD Sports Marketing

April 26, 2013

UFC 159 takes place this weekend (Saturday) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The event is headlined by the UFC Light Heavyweight title fight between Jon “Bones” Jones and Chael Sonnen.

From top to bottom, UFC 159 has all the attributes to become card of the year. VFD Sports Marketing athlete Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia is also fighting on the card, facing The Ultimate Fighter alumni Cody McKenzie.

Below are three predictions for the top main card bouts at UFC 159, plus our assessment of Leonard Garcia vs. Cody McKenzie, which will be aired LIVE on Facebook.

Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen

There’s no doubt that Jon Jones is a clear favorite in this fight. He’s bigger, faster, stronger and meaner. Yet, Chael Sonnen is well-known for leaving everything inside the Octagon, so this is far from being a stroll in the park for Jones. This fight will be more competitive than many people think, with Jon Jones defending his title via Submission in Round 4.

Michael Bisping vs. Alan Belcher

Both are great fighters, but history shows that Alan Belcher has the right skillset to leave the arena victorious. Belcher’s superior striking skills and defensive grappling will be the key in defeating Michael Bisping on Saturday night. Second round TKO for “The Talent”.

Roy Nelson vs. Cheick Kongo

This one has Fight of the Night written all over it. Nelson and Kongo are always ready for a toe-to-toe throwdown. Roy Nelson’s ability to absorb punishment is legendary. This could prove itself as the most important “skill” to possess against a power striker like Kongo. No one would be surprised if this fight goes either way, but our pick goes to Roy Nelson via TKO in 3rd.

Leonard Garcia vs. Cody McKenzie

The most impressive thing about Leonard Garcia is that he never gets tired. He just goes on and on. More than anything, many fighters get frustrated and tend to make mistakes against Leonard Garcia. Unfortunately for McKenzie, Garcia is a bad match-up for him both stylistically and technically. In one of his pre-fight interviews, “Bad Boy” said that Carlos Condit, Jon Jones, Frank Mir and other Jackson’s fighters would gather just to see him spar. Let’s hope for another exciting fight from Garcia, this time with the ‘W’. Leonard via Decision.
