VFD Sports Marketing Fight Of The Week: Jones vs. Hamill

November 25, 2014

It’s amazing that in the first fight where we really saw Jon Jones’ true potential, he was disqualified for illegal elbows. He still has not lost a fight since then, with that DQ being the only blemish on a perfect record.

In The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, on December 5, 2009 from The Palms in Las Vegas, Matt Hamill took so much punishment from Jon Jones that it was obvious who the better fighter was. But the issue was that the 12 to 6 elbow that Jones used when on top of Hamill was illegal because, as Joe Rogan commented during the fight, some people on the fight commission saw ice-breaking demonstrations using a 12 to 6 elbow, and they outlawed it for that reason. That ruling was pretty crazy since elbows from other directions are just as bad. It cost Jon Jones his only professional loss ever. Check out the fight below:

Jones really beat up Matt Hamill in the fight and Hamill had never been dominated like that before. Jon Jones went on to have one of the greatest MMA careers ever and is still going strong.
